The evidence on universals in expression and in physiology strongly suggests that there is a biological basis to the emotions that have been studied.

Yet, strangely, jealousy and parental love, two emotions that figure prominently in evolutionary psychology, are absent from Ekman's list of the emotions.

Ekman emotions

During the 1970s, psychologist Paul Eckman identified six basic emotions that he suggested were universally experienced in all human cultures. The emotions he identified were happiness, sadness, disgust, fear, surprise, and anger. He later expanded his list of basic emotions to include such things as pride, shame, embarrassment, and excitement. I liked the way Ekman sorted out all the emotions, reduced them to a canonical set, and showed the relationships between emotions like fear and surprise. The work he did with people who have never seen television or actors was a thought-provoking inclusion, and helped me think about my own emotions. Ekman, Paul.

What are basic emotions In the last six chapters, Dr. Ekman focused in more details on discussing how to deal with each type of emotions such as sadness, anger, surprise, fear, disgust, contempt, enjoyable emotions, and lies. In this revised printing of Emotions Revealed, Dr. Ekman explains the roots of our emotions―anger, fear, disgust, sadness, and happiness―and shows how they cascade across our faces, providing clear signals to those who can identify the clues.
